YOUR PROJECT:

THE SINGLE IRISH CHAIN LAP QUILT

The centerpiece of this exciting course is the highly popular “Single Irish Chain” quilt pattern. By sewing strip sets, you’ll create a timeless design that magically transforms before your eyes. As you piece together your quilt, you’ll discover why this has been a firm favourite for generations of Quilters.

Because everyone has their own personal taste, we ask you to bring your own coloured fabrics for your quilt – that way you can choose colours that will coordinate beautifully with your own home. As you can see from some of the photos in this class listing, fabrics can have an enormous impact on the finished piece. Choose fabrics that you love, and you will end up with a beautiful quilt that you will love for years to come. You will need 1 Jelly Roll of fabric that will pop against the white fabric provided by Jacki.

You Will Learn:

  • how to cut patchwork fabric correctly
  • how to use a rotary cutter
  • how to use a patchwork ruler
  • how to use a use a cutting mat
  • how to piece
  • how to pin
  • how to nest seams to achieve crisp points
  • how to press pieces properly
  • traditional and modern patchwork techniques
  • basting a quilt ie putting the top layer, wadding and backing together
  • straight-line quilting
  • make binding
  • attach and join binding

WHAT’S INCLUDED:

  • The Single Irish Chain Pattern & instructions
  • White quilting cotton to contrast with your own Jelly Roll fabric
  • use of all quilting equipment including cutting mat & rotary cutter
  • use of the studio sewing machine (or bring your own, see below), & all sewing equipment
  • Tea, Coffee and other refreshments, plus lots of biscuits to keep you going

YOU WILL NEED TO BRING:

  • Fabric, wadding & binding for your quilt (details of requirements will be emailed to you once you book)
  • thread that coordinates
  • You may wish to bring your own sewing machine.  If so, please get in touch to let me know the make and model & I can let you know if it is suitable for this class. Your machine must be in good working order as I am not able to service or fix it. If there are consistent issues that keep the rest of the class back then I will politely ask you to continue the class with one of the class machines instead.

SKILL LEVEL:

Level 1 – you need to know how to use a sewing machine to attend this workshop

This is perfect as a first quilt project and only requires a basic working knowledge of a sewing machine i.e., how to thread the machine and wind the bobbin.

This class is suitable for ages 13 and up! If you are booking for a teen who is perhaps a bit nervous to come on their own, they are welcome to bring a chaperone (please do let me know in advance so I can keep an eye on numbers). Or even better, why not book a spot for you to learn along with them!

Hi! I’m Jacki and I’ve been making quilts for 20yrs. My Instagram page, Heritage Quilts NI, is a good place for you to check out samples of my work. From message quilts to commissioned birthday quilts each one is unique and personalised. These quilts are precious heirlooms to be passed from one generation to the next.

The sheer joy I get from seeing how different colour placements completely change the look of a quilt is why I’ve included examples of different colour ways (placements) for you to start to think about how you’d like your cushion cover to look.

I find quilting to be therapeutic and want to share that with you also. I love creating with fabric and am excited for you to unleash your creative side with patchwork and quilting. This new skill will allow you to create bespoke pieces for yourself, family and friends. The lap quilt will whet your appetite and you’ll want to get started with your next quilt asap.
