Overall, an intermediate patchwork course serves to refine skills, broaden creative horizons, and empower quilters to take on more complex projects while honing their craftsmanship in the intricate art of quilting.

Throughout this comprehensive course, you’ll be guided step-by-step by our experienced quilting instructor, Jacki Bradley, who is passionate about sharing their expertise with newcomers to the craft.

The “Goodnight Irene” quilt is a traditional and iconic quilt pattern that has been cherished for its intricate design and nostalgic charm. It typically features a repeating block pattern consisting of various shapes.

Named after the famous folk song “Goodnight, Irene,” this quilt design incorporates a blend of vibrant colors and contrasting fabrics to create a captivating visual effect. The pattern often includes a combination of solid-colored blocks and patterned pieces, carefully arranged to form a harmonious and balanced composition.

The quilt is known for its versatility, allowing quilters to showcase their creativity by choosing fabrics that complement each other or convey a particular theme.

Quilters often take pride in crafting this quilt pattern due to its challenging yet rewarding nature, requiring precision in cutting and piecing together the various shapes. The “Goodnight Irene” quilt stands as a testament to the quilter’s skill and dedication, resulting in a timeless piece of art that brings warmth and beauty to any home.

THE Goodnight Irene Lap Quilt-top

A lap-sized “Goodnight Irene” quilt is a cozy and charming creation that retains the essence of the traditional pattern while being perfectly sized for comfort and warmth.

In this course you will make a lap-size quilt-top. You can then decide whether to quilt yourself at home after the course, or take it to a king arm quilter. Jacki will be able to advise further on this during the course.

You will need 4 Charm Packs (5″ size) that will pop against the white fabric provided by Jacki.

You Will Learn:

Intermediate-level classes emphasize the importance of accuracy in measurements, seam allowances, and cutting techniques. You will refine your skills to achieve precise seams and alignment, enabling you to create more intricate and professional-looking quilts.

  • The Goodnight Irene Pattern & instructions
  • White quilting cotton to contrast with your own Charm Pack fabric
  • use of all quilting equipment including cutting mat & rotary cutter
  • use of the studio sewing machine (or bring your own, see below), & all sewing equipment
  • Tea, Coffee and other refreshments, plus lots of biscuits to keep you going

  • 4 Charm Packs (5″size)
  • A spool of white cotton thread
  • You may wish to bring your own sewing machine.  If so, please get in touch to let me know the make and model & I can let you know if it is suitable for this class. Your machine must be in good working order as I am not able to service or fix it. If there are consistent issues that keep the rest of the class back then I will politely ask you to continue the class with one of the class machines instead.

You must have a basic understanding of patchwork and have preferably done some simple patchwork projects in the past.

You must also be confident in using the sewing machine independently (be able to wind the bobbin, thread the machine and sew even seams at the very least).

This class is suitable for ages 13 and up! If you are booking for a teen who is perhaps a bit nervous to come on their own, they are welcome to bring a chaperone (please do let me know in advance so I can keep an eye on numbers). Or even better, why not book a spot for you to learn along with them!

Hi! I’m Jacki and I’ve been making quilts for 20yrs. My Instagram page, Heritage Quilts NI, is a good place for you to check out samples of my work. From message quilts to commissioned birthday quilts each one is unique and personalised. These quilts are precious heirlooms to be passed from one generation to the next.

The sheer joy I get from seeing how different colour placements completely change the look of a quilt is why I’ve included examples of different colour ways (placements) for you to start to think about how you’d like your cushion cover to look.

I find quilting to be therapeutic and want to share that with you also. I love creating with fabric and am excited for you to unleash your creative side with patchwork and quilting. This new skill will allow you to create bespoke pieces for yourself, family and friends. The lap quilt will whet your appetite and you’ll want to get started with your next quilt asap.

Held in the lovely, bright and spacious Threadquarters studio! 49 Main Street, Bangor, NI. Located on the first floor.
